Notes for James Harrison Mathews:

General Notes:

Researched by Mary V. Bass. Bondsman: Keller Matthews his brother.

James Harrison Mathes, son of James and Miriam (Thomas ) Mathes, was born in Jefferson

County, Kentucky, on May 8 1813. James was only six years old when the family moved to

Tennessee in 1819, and barely thirteen when his father died in 1826. His brother Keller was

perhaps two years older, and his brother William, more than ten years older, and had already

married and established his own household. Keller’s name preserved in family records by James’

descendants suggests a close relationship between the younger brothers who were left with the care of their mother and five sisters at a time when such was considered the duty of male

members of the family.

In the 1830's, much of the social life of the community centered around the church, and it was

probably there that James met and courted Harriet, the eldest daughter of Eli J. and Elizabeth

(Lasater) Allen. The Allen family had moved into the Bradley's Creek community from Statesville,

across the line in Wilson County at some time before 1930. The were of the Baptist faith. The

bond for the marriage of James H. Mathes to Harriet Allen was issued on August 5, 1834.

Keller Mathes served as bondsman for his younger brother. James was twenty-two; Harriet,

nineteen.

It was in 1847, following his mother’s death, that James acquired title to 52 acres of the original

Mathes farm. Not fully verified, it appears that he later acquired title to the interests retained by his sisters, and thus a total of 192 acres of the land purchased by his father in September of 1820. In the 1840 Census, he is listed as engaged in both agriculture and manufacture. By 1850, he had built the house that remained his home during his lifetime, and it was here that his family was reared. It may be that the timber was cut off the place, and that he built the house himself.

Evidence of his skill in carpentry is found in 1858, when the Committee appointed by Bradley's

Creek Baptist Church selected him for major repairs to the Church building.

James's new home was next door to the old Mathes home which his sisters continued to occupy.

During the Civil War, the Mathes family supported the Confederacy. Two of James' sons, Ely Allen and William Garrison, served with the Confederate Army. A reminder of the harshness of this period is found in the Church Minutes wherein it is noted that all services were suspended for

almost a year in 1863 during the Federal occupancy in Rutherford County. The will of James H.

Mathes was executed on October 2, 1895, wherein it is provided that his beloved wife Harriet is to

have the use of all his lands (fully described) during her natural life, and his nine living children are named. His sons, James Robert Mathes, and William Garrison Mathes were appointed executors without bond, and requested to accept the appointment. Witnesses were H.B. Hogwood and T.F. Haynes. The will was presented for probate at the Rutherford County Court , July Term,1896, and recorded on July 24, 1896.

The thirteen children of James Harrison and Harriet (Allen) Mathes were; Ann Arbella (Bella),

Nancy Rebecca, James Robert (Bob), Ely Allen (Al) , William Garrison ( Garris ), Elizabeth Susan

(Betsey) , Harriet Frances ( Fannie), Granville Turner (Jim), Sarah Victoria (Sallie), Jim Lunsford,

Sidney Johnston. Martha Lucerne (Lucy) and Berry. James dedicated approximately one acre of

his land to be known as the James Harrison Mathes family burying ground. It is enclosed by a

stone wall.

Of his character , it was written by the Baptist Minister, G. A. Ogle; "While he never attached

himself to any church, he was a good man, upright, true, conscientious . He enjoyed the

confidence of his neighbors and the true friendship of all who knew him." Harriet (Allen) Mathes

survived her husband by two years, and is buried beside him in the family graveyard. A large and

impressive monument erected there is inscribed on the side facing west; James H. Mathes, May

8, 1813; June 2, 1896. Harriet Allen Mathes, March 28, 1815; July 10, 1898. While it is known that not all of their children are buried in this plot, the name of their thirteen children are inscribed on the side of the monument that faces east.
